Pushing the paradigm of language recovery: the cases of Basque and Nawat

This is an expanded version of the similarly titled seminar I gave at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa in October, 2014, for all those interested.

Language recovery: Can we learn from each other (please...)?

This talk takes its inspiration from two key parts of my life experience. I moved to Euskal Herria (the Basque Country) in the late ‘70s, adopted Basque as a daily language as well as an object of study, and ever since have brushed shoulders continually with the Basque language recovery scene. And in the early 2000s I came to a Central American country, El Salvador, and got deeply involved in a new challenge, the recovery of the country’s only remaining native language, already highly endangered: Nawat. One of my hopes was that I would figure out how to transfer some of what I had learnt from the successes and achievements of the Basque language recovery (LR) experience to a very different context and a new fight.

Sobre el náhuat, nahuahablantes y hablantes de náhuat

El náhuat está en un mal momento: se muere. Lleva más o menos alrededor de unos cien años en este mal momento, muriéndose.

Sí, cien, y es para redondear, porque no sé un número exacto, pero digo cien porque ya antes del fastidioso año 1932 cuando se cometió un holocausto contra el pueblo indígena que los estudiosos llaman "pipil", el pueblo del náhuat, su lengua ya andaba en problemas, el número de hablantes iba en declive, empezaba a ceder el paso al español. Esta fue la época en la que algunos pocos vieron el valor de la lengua autóctona del pueblo y empezaron los tímidos esfuerzos para evitar su pérdida completa.

Lenguas amenazadas en el mundo (Endangered Languages Project)

Me fascinan los idiomas en general y siento una atracción especial hacia los que han sido maltratados por la historia, la sociedad o las circunstancias y luchan por hacerse conocer y respetar o incluso simplemente por sobrevivir. Puedo hablar algunos, he estudiado otros, conozco algo de la situación de algunos más. Y tengo el privilegio de haber podido conocer de cerca e incluso desde muy "dentro" los procesos de recuperación de dos en concreto: el euskera y el náhuat.
